Pocahontas, a small town in Tazewell county is one of our favorite places to go. The town is only 20 minutes away and we have bus services during the week too to Pocahontas. We love to take our friends to the Pocahontas Exhibition coal mine. The town itself is small and in a bad shape. However, you can feel and sense the liveliness of Pocahontas Town during the coal age by looking at the historical buildings still remaining.

The Broken Remnant of old coal town

Pocahontas is a town in Tazewell County, Virginia, named for the Algonquian Indian woman Pocahontas. The population was 441 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bluefield, WV-VA micropolitan area which has a population of 107,578. Pocahontas was the location of the start of this region’s coal boom with a spur line that launched the Norfolk and Western Railroad (now Norfolk Southern) into national prominence during the 1880s. The large two-state coal region bears the town’s name. Pocahontas was also the birthplace of jazz pianist Teddy Weatherford.

The Town of Pocahontas owns and operates the Pocahontas Exhibition Mine and Museum, a National Historic Landmark and Virginia’s official “coal heritage zone.” The “show mine,” as many locals call it, features tours from retired coal miners into the real mine that served as the birthplace of the world-famous Pocahontas #3 coal that heated homes across the United States and was the chosen fuel of the United States Navy. The exhibition mine, open from April-October annually, features a 13-foot tall coal seam. There is also a museum and education center located in the mine’s former powerhouse.

The town also features a registered Virginia Historic site, the Pocahontas Cemetery. The cemetery features graves that are over 100 years old and a mass grave of coal miners killed in a mine explosion in Pocahontas on March 13, 1884. Each year, the town holds a ceremony at the cemetery to remember the more than 114 coal miners killed in the explosion.

The town is also home to St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church which features ten life-sized murals on the ceiling and walls of the church. The church also holds an annual Hungarian cabbage roll dinner to honor the European heritage of the coalfields.

On Labor Day each year, Pocahontas is home to the Coal Miners Reunion, which brings together retired coal miners and railroad workers from across the United States to be honored by the town with a parade and luncheon. The festival also includes special recognition of the oldest and longest-serving miners or railroad workers present and stump speeches from local political candidates.

On the last Saturday in April, the town celebrates the official seasonal opening of the Pocahontas Exhibition Mine and Museum with a special ceremony and luncheon and half-price admission to the exhibition mine. Earlier in the day, the town hosts the annual Pocahontas Indian Run, a 5-mile run through the historic town and scenic community that brings runners from across the United States. The event also features a 3-mile Indian Walk and a Papoose Run for children 6-12. In the evening, there is a memorial ceremony at the Pocahontas Cemetery for the miners killed in the 1884 mine explosion. Which killed 114 coal miners.

I go to Grundy for work and for fun both. We love the country and winding roads over there. Plus you can see some beautiful sedimentary srtuctures. Well, here are some pictures.

The Grundy-Beautiful Sandstone

Grundy is a town in Buchanan County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,105 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Buchanan County. The town is noted for its educational institutions and their role in the town’s economic rebirth. In the past, the town served as a stopover for Union troops on their way to the Battle of Saltville. The town is also noteworthy for its flood control project, where the mountain across the river was blasted to make way for new development.

The town, founded in 1858 upon the formation of Buchanan County, was named for Felix Grundy (1777-1840), United States Attorney General (1838-1839) and United States Senator from Tennessee (1839-1840). It was incorporated in 1876. The present courthouse dates from 1905.

Grundy is located at 37°16?36?N 82°5?42?W? / ?37.27667°N 82.095°W? / 37.27667; -82.095 (37.276760, -82.095038)[9]. The town is located at intersection of U.S. Route 460 and State Route 83 directly on the banks of the Levisa Fork River. Grundy is located in the coalfields of the Appalachian Mountains.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.0 square miles (13.1 km²), all of it land.

Grundy is located in the Cumberland Plateau Region. The town is tightly tucked within the mountains in little valleys called hollows or ‘hollers’.

Transportation
Grundy is served by the Grundy Municipal Airport located in Vansant. The airport serves general aviation air traffic. Commercial air traffic can be found at airports in Bluefield (1 hour driving away) and Beckley (2 hours driving away) in West Virginia and at the Tri-Cities Regional Airport in Tennessee (about 2 hours driving away).

Four County Transit maintains a local trolley system that services downtown locations. Stops include the Courthouse, Grundy Church of Christ, the former Food City parking lot, the Grundy Community Center, the Appalachian School of Law, and the former downtown parking lot.[10]

Grundy is at the corner of the Levisa River and Slate Creek. The Norfolk Southern Railway maintains tracks and runs trains through the town but no trains stop in Grundy.

Grundy is served by U.S. Highway 460. The Coalfields Expressway will be built just to the north and east of town. State Route 83 is also a major highway in the area.
